Abstract: The principles of the surface plasmon resonance method are described in the paper. This method is based on excitation of a surface plasmons (waves of free charge carriers oscillations) in a thin metal film by evanescent electromagnetic wave which propagating behind of media interface under total internal reflection conditions. It allows us to determinate refractive index change in thin boundary layer of investigated medium with thickness of hundreds of nanometers with sensitivity up to 10-6 (and up to 10-8 in case of using interference phenomena). An overview of most cited publications on this method is given. The existing modifications and applications of the method are shown. A potential perspective of using this method for visualization and quantitative diagnostics of heat and mass transfer processes in nanoscale boundary layer of liquid is reviewed. It was shown that with help of surface plasmon resonance the experimental setup can be created that allows us to visualize the dynamics of change in the distribution of the refractive index of the medium in boundary layer. The original experimental setup designed by the authors for this purpose is described. It was created on the basis of the experimental setup based on frustrated total internal reflection. The first experimental results obtained with the new setup are shown: visualization of mixing of distilled water and glycerol 10 ul droplets on horizontal substrate
